The Peter Hand Trio returns to New Bedford to perform Thursday, August 10 at AHA Night, with New York-based guitarist Peter Hand and standout SouthCoast musicians Marty Ballou on bass and Mark Walker on drums.
The Peter Hand Trio returns to New Bedford to perform Thursday, August 10 at AHA Night, with New York-based guitarist Peter Hand and standout SouthCoast musicians Marty Ballou on bass and Mark Walker on drums.
Presented by Whaling City Sound for this month’s AHA theme “Jammin’ In The Streets,” the trio will play music of jazz greats Horace Silver, Dizzy Gillespie and Duke Ellington, Latin & Brazilian jazz, plus a healthy dose of funk and R&B standards. Guitarist, composer and arranger Peter Hand has worked with many top artists and bands including Houston Person, Lee Konitz, Carmen Lundy, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, Chicago Jazz Orchestra, and the Charleston Jazz Orchestra. His most recent album, Out Of Hand, (Savant Records), received rave reviews and reached No. 4 on the JazzWeek Radio Chart of top 50 CDs.
Marty Ballou is high on the list of New England’s “first-call” bassists. Highly regarded nationally for his work in the jazz and blues fields, he is equally at home in other genres including folk, rock, pop and Americana, with a massive list of credits, including working with Peter Wolf, Herb Ellis, Roomful of Blues, Cheryl Wheeler, Duke Robillard, John Hammond and Jimmy Witherspoon.
Drummer Mark Walker has played on over 60 albums, including five Grammy winning and nine Grammy nominated projects. He has had long-standing relationships with artists such as Paquito D’Rivera and the group Oregon, and has performed & recorded with Dianne Reeves, Regina Carter, James Ingram, Michael Brecker, Eliane Elias, the Caribbean Jazz Project and Andy Narell.
The Centre Street Sessions, presented by Whaling City Sound, will be live in the Downtown Historic District (Centre Street), with sets at 5:30 and 7:15 p.m.
